Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse occurs when one person harms another person with whom they have or have had a relationship. Domestic abuse can be where one person physically attacks another, but it may also be emotional, sexual or financial abuse.

Domestic abuse is categorised (by the Police) by any incident or pattern of incidents of:

  • Emotional or Psychological Abuse – which is typically verbal and includes name-calling, threats and manipulation;
  • Gaslighting – which is a form of psychological abuse where false information is presented to the victim to encourage them to doubt their memory and perception of reality;
  • Controlling coercive behaviour – which is when an abuser uses a pattern of behaviour over time to exert power and control. This can include isolating them from sources of support and regulating their everyday behaviour;
  • Economic abuse – which involves controlling access to your money or resources;
  • Sexual abuse – this doesn’t have to be physical. They might manipulate or coerce you into doing things you don’t want to do;
  • Violence – is where the abuser physically harms or threatens to harm the victim or encourages others to do so.
