Last Monday two teams of 6 participated in the Guildford Legal Walk, a 10km sponsored walk through the Surrey countryside. It was a stunning autumn evening and it was enjoyed by all!

Funds raised by the walk help hundreds of the poorest people in the County which is currently a legal aid “desert” for all areas of social welfare law with no legal aid for housing, community care, or any other social welfare areas of law.

This event is even more important this year because the advice agencies are struggling to maintain services with the increased challenges created by COVID-19 and the lockdown. The number of people seeking help with Debt, Benefits and Employment has increased dramatically since the start of the pandemic. Those seeking help with Domestic Violence has also risen sharply and, in September, when the stay on evictions is lifted there will be a “tsunami” of people facing homelessness.

We enjoyed it so much that we are also participating in the virtual London Legal Walk this next Monday, which will be 10,000 steps. We are not sure the weather will be quite so amenable.
