Mr Morrison from our Healthcare Regulatory Team was invited to attend a review dinner on 5 November 2019, hosted by QEB Hollis Whiteman. He attended alongside other leading firms who advise clients in respect to the complex area of law of gross negligence manslaughter. An independent review was commissioned by the General Medical Council into this area of law following the tragic death of a child and subsequent prosecution and conviction of a senior paediatric trainee for that death (R v Bawa-Garba (Hadiza) [2016]). The decision by the GMC to erase that doctor following her conviction caused concern in some sections of the medical industry. As a result, and to assist the GMC going forward, they commissioned Dr Leslie Hamilton to review this area of law and provide recommendations.

His report was published in June 2019 and is essential reading for those interested in the development of this area of law. Last night’s dinner was chaired by Dr Hamilton and the legal chair of the review (Selva Ramasamy QC – QEB Hollis Whiteman) who lead some very interesting discussions with those present.

Mr Morrison continues to advise and represent doctors who are faced with criminal investigations and understands the extreme pressures such investigations can generate.

Should you need any advice in this area of law, please do not hesitate to contact him by email, by telephone on 01483 608160 or alternatively make an online enquiry and we will get back to you.
